Ingredients
2 pounds stewing beef
1 cup barley
1 bay leaf
2 tablespoons oil
3 carrots, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
1 onion, chopped
8 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon white sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
salt to taste
Preparation
Put most of the ingredients in the slow cooker (cubed meat, bay leaf, carrots, celery, onion, beef broth, black pepper, sugar) and slow cook it for 10 hrs or so. Soak barley, then add the barley and salt during the last 60 minutes of cooking.
